Microsoft Teams: Updates to Teams Events licensing for business, frontline, and education customers

Microsoft Teams Events licensing is updated into foundational and advanced features, with advanced features requiring Teams Enterprise licenses. Teams Premium no longer includes Teams Events capabilities. Event attendee limits vary by license, with capacity packs needed for over 3,000 attendees. Changes roll out in September 2026.

[What and Why:]

We are updating how Microsoft Teams Events capabilities are organized by license type. Teams Events capabilities will be grouped into foundational event features and advanced event features. This update clarifies which licenses map to each category, attendee limits, and the relationship between Teams Enterprise and Teams Premium licensing.

Foundational event features are available with eligible Teams licenses and support creating and running Teams events.

Advanced event features are included with Teams Enterprise licenses and provide additional controls for event production, management, engagement, customization, and analytics.

Many Teams Events capabilities moved from Teams Premium to Teams Enterprise in April 2026. The new Teams Premium license does not provide Teams Events capabilities. Customers who need all Teams Events features must assign organizers an eligible Teams Enterprise license.

For Teams Events larger than 3,000 attendees, organizations need to purchase attendee capacity packs and assign the licenses to the event organizer. Attendee capacity packs enable events with up to 100,000 attendees.

Microsoft reserves the right to enforce email one-time passcode verification for external event participants to protect service health and guard against fraud or abuse. This enforcement is not tied to a specific SKU tier.

General Availability (Worldwide): We will begin rolling out in late September 2026 and expect to complete by late September 2026.

Does the change include an admin control, and can it be controlled through Entra ID group membership?	Yes. Admins manage access to Teams Events capabilities through licensing assignments and related Teams admin controls.
Does the change alter how admins can monitor, report on, or demonstrate compliance activities?	Yes. Organizations may need to review organizer licensing and event capacity requirements to ensure Teams Events are configured appropriately.
