Microsoft OneDrive: OneDrive sync supports up to 1 million items on macOS

OneDrive sync on macOS will increase its item limit from 300,000 to 1 million per device, starting with a Public Preview in mid-October 2026 for Insiders ring users. Devices not meeting hardware requirements will remain at the current limit, with no disruption expected.

[What and why]

In MC1294528, we announced an increase to the item sync limit for OneDrive on Windows. We are now increasing the same item sync limit for OneDrive on macOS: from 300,000 items to 1 million items per sync instance, per device. This increase is designed to help organizations with large OneDrive and SharePoint libraries sync more content reliably across devices.

The capability will be available first in Public Preview for devices enrolled in the Insiders ring, and later in General Availability. Devices that do not meet the minimum hardware and configuration requirements will continue to sync at the existing supported limit of 300,000 items without disruption.

• Public Preview (Worldwide): Rollout will begin in mid-October 2026 and is expected to complete by late October 2026.

Note: Performance is not yet optimized for syncing a high volume of read-only files or for accounts under legal hold. We are actively working to improve performance and reliability for these scenarios.

No action is required if you do not plan to participate in Public Preview. If you plan to evaluate this capability:

• Identify users and devices with large OneDrive or SharePoint libraries that may benefit from the increased sync limit.
• Ensure devices meet the minimum hardware and configuration requirements (i.e., supported operating system, memory, storage, and processor).
• Review the recommended sync configuration for OneDrive and SharePoint sync reliability.
• Inform helpdesk staff and affected users that Public Preview requires the Insiders ring and that devices that do not meet the minimum hardware and configuration requirements will remain at the current supported limit.
