Summary

Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat will offer contextual Cowork recommendations starting September 2026, helping eligible users access relevant tools with editable drafts. Details

[What and why]

Microsoft 365 Copilot users may see contextual recommendations in Copilot Chat when Cowork could help with their task. These recommendations help users discover and access the most appropriate Copilot experience based on their current request.

When a recommendation appears, users can select Try Cowork to open Cowork with their most recent Copilot Chat prompt prefilled as an editable draft. No request is automatically submitted or run. Users can review, modify, or discard the draft before proceeding.

This is an assistive, non-blocking experience designed to help users find relevant tools and complete tasks more efficiently.

[Rollout schedule]

  • Public Preview: Beginning in early September 2026 and expected to complete in October 2026
  • General Availability (Worldwide): Beginning in early September 2026 and expected to complete in  October 2026

Rollout will occur gradually, and availability may vary by user during the deployment period.

What will happen

  • Eligible users may see a contextual recommendation in Copilot Chat when Cowork may be helpful for their task:

  • Users can select Try Cowork to open Cowork with their latest Copilot Chat request prefilled as an editable draft.
  • No prompt is automatically submitted to Cowork.
  • Users remain in control and can review or edit the draft before taking any action.
  • The recommendation experience does not replace or interrupt existing Copilot Chat functionality.
  • Availability depends on licensing, entitlement, Cowork access, and other eligibility requirements.
  • Administrators can prevent the recommendation from being available by disabling access to Cowork for an individual user or the entire tenant

[Action required and recommendations]

No administrator action is required before rollout.

The feature will be enabled automatically for eligible users. Existing licensing, entitlement, and access controls continue to determine which users can access Cowork.

We recommend that administrators:

  • Inform help desk and support teams about the new recommendation experience.
  • Update user adoption and training materials, if applicable.
  • Review current Copilot and Cowork access policies as appropriate.

[Compliance considerations]

No compliance considerations identified. Review as appropriate for your organization.
