[Introduction]
Microsoft Teams is improving the Town hall viewing experience for attendees connecting through Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI). With this update, audio and video streams for Townhall attendees are offloaded directly to the user’s local Windows endpoint when using the new Teams VDI optimization. Offloading means that audio and video processing and delivery move from the virtual desktop to the attendee’s local device, allowing media to stream directly between the device and Microsoft Teams service endpoints over the local network instead of through the VDI session. This reduces virtual desktop resource usage while delivering smoother playback and higher-definition audio and video. This applies only to Windows endpoints.
This message is associated with Roadmap ID 561648.
[When this will happen:]
- Targeted Release: Rollout begins in early-September 2026 and is expected to complete by mid-September 2026.
- General Availability (Worldwide, GCC): Rollout begins late-September 2026 and is expected to complete by mid-October 2026.
- General Availability (GCCH, DoD): Rollout begins mid-October 2026 and is expected to complete by late-October 2026.
[How this affects your organization:]
Who is affected:
- Townhall attendees using Windows endpoints in VDI environments
- Organizations using the new Microsoft Teams VDI optimization
- Supported platforms: Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365, Citrix, Omnissa, Amazon WorkSpaces
What will happen:
- Audio and video for Town hall events are streamed directly to the attendee’s local device instead of through the virtual desktop.
- Users receive:
- Improved video quality (HD where available)
- Lower latency and more reliable playback
- Reduced performance impact on the virtual desktop session
- All existing attendee interactivity features remain available, including:
- Live captions
- DVR
- Reactions
- Streaming chat
- Q&A
- Both first‑party and third‑party enterprise CDNs (eCDNs) are supported.
- When eCDNs are enabled, the attendee’s endpoint establishes a direct peer‑to‑peer connection over the local network, avoiding virtual desktop “double hop” media traffic.
- This feature is enabled automatically when the required Teams client and VDI components are updated; no new admin policy configuration is required.
[What you can do to prepare:]
- Plan to upgrade to a future Teams version targeted for mid-August 2026 (26211.x.x.x or higher)
- Ensure your VDI platform components are updated to supported versions:
- Citrix plugin for Windows: version 2026.15.1.1
- Windows App for Windows (AVD/Windows 365): 2.0.1186.0
- Omnissa Horizon Client for Windows: upcoming release planned for mid-2026 (version 2606 / 8.19 or higher)
- Amazon WorkSpaces client for Windows: 5.33.0
- Inform helpdesk and VDI administrators that media traffic for Town hall attendees will shift from the virtual desktop to the local endpoint.
- Review internal network policies and bandwidth to ensure local endpoint media traffic is allowed for Teams.
- If using third party eCDNs, contact your provider to review any potential configuration change required.
