Summary

Microsoft Viva Insights is enhancing its Leader Auto Identification algorithm to better identify senior leaders for Copilot Analytics access, expanding eligible leaders without removing existing ones. The update rolls out worldwide from late July to early August 2026, requires no immediate action, and allows admins to manage or disable the feature.

Details

Updated July 6, 2026: We have updated the timeline and content (refer to "Action Required"). If your organization is in a DoD environment, you are not impacted by this change and can safely disregard it. We apologize for any inconvenience.

[What and Why:]

We’re enhancing the Leader Auto Identification algorithm in Microsoft Viva Insights (Copilot Analytics) to improve the accuracy and coverage of automatically identified senior leaders across your organization. This update expands identification to additional qualified leaders while maintaining existing assignments. The goal is to simplify onboarding, improve adoption of leadership insights, and ensure the right leaders receive access to Copilot Analytics—while maintaining enterprise-grade security, compliance, and manageability.

[Rollout Schedule:]

General Availability (Worldwide): We will begin rolling out in late July 2026 (previously late June) and expect to complete by early August 2026 (previously early July).

[Impact on Your Organization:]

Who is affected:

  • Organizations using Microsoft Viva Insights (Copilot Analytics)
  • Tenants with M365 Copilot (Premium) license or Viva license
  • Tenants with at least 500 Microsoft Entra ID users
  • Global admins and Viva Insights admins

Platforms/Services:

  • Microsoft Viva Insights
  • Microsoft Copilot Analytics (Copilot Dashboard and Agent Dashboard)
  • Microsoft Admin Center
  • Microsoft Entra ID

What will happen:

  • The CXO auto-identification logic will expand to include additional eligible leaders based on updated thresholds.
  • Existing auto-identified leaders will not be removed as part of this update.
  • Leaders previously removed by admins will not be re-added.
  • Newly identified leaders will automatically receive company-wide access to Copilot Analytics dashboards.
  • The feature remains enabled by default.

Note:
This update improves identification logic only. It does not introduce new data collection or modify underlying data sources.

[Action Required / Recommendations:]

No immediate action is required.

  • After rollout, review the updated list of auto-identified leaders to ensure alignment with your organizational structure.
  • Validate that identified leaders are appropriate recipients for Copilot Analytics access.
  • Add or remove leaders manually as needed using Microsoft Admin Center.

If your organization prefers not to use auto-identification, you can disable this capability using Viva Feature access management:

  • Control name: Copilot Dashboard Auto Enablement
  • Default state: On

Learn more: Microsoft Viva Feature access management | Microsoft Learn

These changes will make leaders eligible for receiving the Onboarding Emails; refer to MC Post MC1247899. If you want these notifications disabled, please open a support ticket from your Admin portal with the title as “Request to disable Leader notifications for Copilot Analytics”.

[Additional considerations:]

  • Auto-identification is designed to simplify onboarding and improve adoption of leadership insights.
  • Manual governance is still supported through admin controls.
  • Disabling the feature will stop automatic identification and associated experiences.

[Compliance considerations:]

Compliance area Explanation
Alteration of how existing customer data is processed or accessed The leader identification algorithm logic is updated to determine eligibility for Copilot Analytics access; underlying data sources remain unchanged.
Modification of AI/ML capabilities The update enhances the leader auto-identification algorithm used by Copilot Analytics.
Admin controls available Admins can disable auto-identification using Viva Feature access management.
